Beauty in functionality
Johannes Itten, a brilliant teacher at the Bauhaus school, wrote:
“If in composing a form, heart and hand are at one, this form will
become the expression of an intellectual, spiritual content. If this
form is able to convey this content to the viewer, it will have
the impact of a work of art.”
When creating the Bauhaus collection
for the studio of the same name, we
did not make plans, did not make drawings,
we had only a few abstract and yet ambitious
tasks namely to give the most ordinary pieces
of furniture the maximum functionality
and to avoid any design as such.
In the course of the work, the function
defined the form having turned the ordinary
furniture into independent art objects.
The furniture of the series is
completely made of solid ash:
the wood has been used by the
Scandinavian people since olden
days to manufacture of weapons.
This wood is famous for its spe-
cial strength and elasticity.

in decoration (metal, concrete). It serves as a harmonious contrast of warm,
